Another year gone in the blink of an eye, but what we’ve achieved as a family, a team and as a company through trying times is something I’m immensely proud of. As I’m sure many experienced, 2021 presented a range of challenges and we’ve had to adapt and evolve to work with these challenges - and our team delivered, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

And to you, our wine-loving-extended-family… without you we couldn’t do what we do. Your commitment and support is appreciated beyond measure and we love being able to take you on this journey with us.

Following tradition, today I like to reflect on the year that’s been, through the highs and the lows, to be thankful for what we have, and to give you the rundown on all things Brockenchack.

In 2021…

  • We launched two new luxury Bed and Breakfasts, bringing our accommodation offering to three unique country escapes in the heart of Eden Valley.
  • We won a range of gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as adding ‘Eden Valley Winery of the Year’ from the Melbourne International Wine Competition to our list of awards.
  • We released the D.E.N Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon in honour of the amazing work our Sales Manager (and my son-in-law) Darren does for our business.
  • We hosted our first three-day strategy workshop here in Eden Valley, with staff members travelling all the way from Queensland and New Zealand, gearing us up for a bigger and better year of Brockenchack.

We employed our gun Marketing Coordinator Chloë, who hit the ground running, helping us navigate the wild world of social media and marketing as well as our superstar all-rounder, Kylie, who keeps Darren in check while managing our stock control, logistics and getting orders out to you, all over the country.

As our team continues to grow, I can say with my hand on heart that we love the direction Brockenchack is headed with this group of motivated, likeminded, wine-loving enthusiasts helping to steer the ship.

And that was just the business side, then onto our Grandkids…

Macka (Mackenzie William Riesling) has signed on the dotted line to officially join our team in January 2022 with the long-term goal of becoming our Chief Financial Officer - and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Jacko (Jack Harrison Shiraz) continues to manage the property impeccably and began building his herd of black angus cattle to 70, taking after his other grandfather, Charles Pollock. He also began dating the lovely Laura who now works and lives with us, lending a hand around the property and training to take over management of the B&Bs. Bronte (Miss Bronte Cabernet Sauvignon) kickstarted her university degree in exercise physiology while working in her spare time as a dance instructor. Charli (Charli Jaye Chardonnay) also started studying with a degree in nursing, while also upping her hours at our Buderim office to ensure everyone receives their wine on time!

And while we have so much to be grateful for, what goes up must come down… this year we saw considerable business growth and some exciting wins on the board, but on October 21st, we were hit with the unexpected. A freak hailstorm ravaging our region, wiping out what was predicted to be a very good Brockenchack crop. With our vines damaged, future vintage diminished, and our spirits dampened, this storm has had a devastating effect on the region and our business, in a time when the wine industry is more competitive and volatile than ever before. This has made us review our operations, our pricing, and our approach to business. But rest assured, we are nursing our vines back to health to ensure we are back to full yields come the 2023 vintage season.

Marilyn continues to manage this place like clockwork, running around behind the scenes to ensure our B&B guests are well cared for, the family are fed (including the chickens) and the other countless jobs she does on a day-to-day basis. The two of us continue to be busy as ever, which I continue to question how this comes about in our 70s… although I get the feeling my family and team would attest to the fact that I can’t remain stationary, both personally and in business.

So, from our family to yours, we thank you from the very bottom of our hearts for your continued support through these crazy and unpredictable times. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to enjoying another year of Brockenchack Wines with you.

All the best

Trev Harch
